'My friend named her daughter something similar to a Barbie doll - I hate it'

We all have ideas in our heads about what we may call our children if we choose to have them. Some parents may prefer traditional names, whilst others may opt for something a little more 'stand-out' and unusual so there are no other children on the school register with a name like theirs.

But what would you do if someone you knew named their child something and you hated it? Would you let them know, or would you keep schtum - because really, it isn't any of your business? One woman took to Mumsnet to express her horror that someone she knew had named their child Dolly.

She wrote: "Someone I know has called their new baby Dolly and I can't stand it. Of course, they're entitled to call their children what they like and it's none of my business. Just before someone tells me that.

"I don't like it because it sounds babyish and not a real name. It's more like a nickname. It makes me think of an old lady or a Barbie doll, not a person."

Unsurprisingly, comments included things like: "Stop being so judgy."

"The name doesn't seem to have held Ms Parton back", another noted.

Another wrote: "Not a common name but definitely not a bonkers name."

One mum said she used to call her daughter Dolly as a pet name, writing: "I had an old aunt called Dol, short for Dorothy. I think it’s cute. I sometimes used to call my daughter Dolly as a pet name."

Another noted that names are cyclical, commenting: "But names go in cycles and a lot of the current favourites were old people's names until they got given to babies."

"Weirdly I've never thought of it as being like a doll. It's just short for Dorothy to me", one wrote. They continued: " There are plenty of gallumping Graces and miserable Joys. I also came across a Neil who was literally standing up the other day", they joked.
