'My fitness levels are very embarrassing' - Roy Keane's surprising health admission

Roy Keane has freely acknowledged his current fitness levels are 'actually very embarrassing.'

While it's not a complete shock to hear this from any 50-year-old, the fact that the Man United legend is still sporting a trim figure led interviewer Joe Molloy to ask how he keeps fit during an interview on Off the Ball.

But Keane cut across the presenter to push back against the notion that he's still in good shape.

He replied: "I'm not fit, I'm far from fit. My fitness levels are actually very embarrassing.

"Because I've not put on loads of weight doesn't mean I'm fit. I wouldn't be able to do any sort of running.

"I'll put it this way - I've been invited a number of times over the past few years to play in one of these legend exhibition games or whatever you might call it.

"I turn them down because I'd find it really difficult to get around (the pitch). I've too many injury problems...

"I do try to have a decent diet and I am wary of putting on too much weight but I certainly wouldn't be fit enough to go on any sort of run.

"I do a small bit of cycling but even with that, I'm not exactly Sean Kelly y'know."

He was then asked if he has adopted any less intense sporting pursuits in place of football such as playing golf since that's such a common answer from ex-pros.

But he stated he tried golf a few times and it wasn't really for him.

He then added: "The only exercise I'd really do is walking my dogs but as we know that doesn't exactly keep you fit.

"It doesn't get your heart rate up but it keeps you busy and keeps the body moving and the mind occupied."

Elsewhere in the chat, he revealed he usually returns home to Ireland every three weeks or so since his mother still lives in Cork.

Speaking of The Rebel County, he also offered up a tongue-in-cheek explanation for what gesture he was about to do when the camera cut away from him at Croke Park during their heavy defeat to Dublin in this summer's GAA Championship.

Upon being booed after being shown on the big screen, it seemed pretty clear a laughing Keane was just about to give them the finger before the cameraman wisely cut back to the action on the pitch.

But instead, Cork's most famous son quipped: "Do you know what I was doing...I'd lost a bet and even though there was still plenty of time left in the game I knew Cork were never going to come back.

"So I was just about to hand over the few bob that I'd lost. There ya go, that's what I was doing."

He also added: "Obviously I was disappointed at Croke Park...not with the booing, with the result as Cork got well beaten!

"But it was a good day out and I was well looked after. I can survive a few boos, don't worry."

Funnily enough, there was definitely an element of truth in that as longtime Ireland kit man Dick Redmond shared a pic on the day that made it clear he had won a wager on the game with Roy.
