'My first option', Fabian Schar drops hint on Newcastle United future and talks about team pact after Spurs

Fabian Schar has signalled that he wants to be part of Eddie Howe's revolution at Newcastle United in the next few years. Schar has been in negotiations with the Magpies over a contract extension as he looks to sign one of the most important deals of his career.

At 30, Schar could get past the 100 appearance mark for Newcastle during the run-in but has an eye on the future too. After signing a one year extension last summer, the deal put talk of a move to the Bundesliga on hold.

Schar's German-based agency Sport 360 have excellent links in the Bundesliga with clients already at clubs like Frankfurt, Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin. But Schar says Newcastle are his first choice as he considers his next step.

When asked about his future, Schar told Chronicle Live: "I think I will know soon. I enjoy playing for Newcastle United under Eddie Howe. Hopefully, we can say more in a few weeks. But I'm very happy here. Newcastle are my first option."

Schar has never made excuses during his time at Newcastle and has impressively fronted up when things haven't been up to scratch. And he admitted that serious words had to be exchanged after the recent 5-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Schar, who had a solid game in the 1-0 win over Wolves, admitted there had to be a reaction after the collapse against Spurs in the second half: "We had to talk to each other about Spurs. Especially the second half.

"Every single player knew it wasn't good enough. First you start with yourself, then perform better as a team, I think it's what everyone done. Obviously we know that Spurs in the second half wasn't good enough from us. We had to show that reaction.

"I think that's what we done from the first minute. Especially at home you have to get the crowd behind you so I think we reacted well and done what we needed to. The reaction after Spurs was great and we can be happy with that."

The victory over Wanderers puts Newcastle on 34 points and they now hold a 10-point advantage over third bottom Burnley in the Premier League with seven matches to play. A win over Leicester City could go a long way to clinching survival.

Looking back on the Wolves game, Schar said: "It was a big win, and fully deserved from minute one of the game. I think we were the better team throughout. Playing at home was important for us but we fully deserved it. "We didn't let Wolves create a lot or allow them to settle into the game. After the last few games (three defeats) it was vital to come back with this win on a Friday night in front of our fans."
