'My favourite view? Piccadilly Gardens when it’s empty'

Some of the city’s most stylish folks pass through the doors of The Corner Barber Shop, on Stevenson Square, and have been doing so for 15 years.

It means Adam Akoadan has a big responsibility — to be the barber of choice in the Northern Quarter — and it's one he appears to have navigated well, taking over the business just a couple of years after it opened.

The 48-year-old is relaxed, and enjoying a rare break in trade on a sunny March afternoon when the MEN pays him a visit.

So what makes him tick?

Where’s your favourite hidden gem?

Al Faisal. I’ve been eating there for years, and the reason for that is it’s fresh — they cook every morning, and the food is so fresh. I like it. The people are great, too.

What’s your favourite view of the city or in the city?

I love the Northern Quarter, Manchester in general is beautiful — but my answer is Piccadilly Gardens when it’s empty. It’s gorgeous.

Where’s best to go for your dinner in town?

I like to go to Ask Italian, it’s a beautiful place.

What are the five words that best describe the city?

Amazing, excellent, beautiful, gorgeous, — and I love it!

City or United?

I used to be United but as soon as Sir Alex Ferguson left, I left too. Honestly, that’s the reason.

Liam or Noel?

Liam Gallagher, he’s the one.

Your favourite city pub is…?

I’ve not been out for a while, but around here it’d have to be Soup Kitchen. It’s a beautiful place. I also like Hula downstairs over there, it’s a little beautiful bar. Whiskey Jar is good too, it’s great for music and whisky.

What’s the one change you'd make to Manchester if you could…

I would take every single homeless person and put them somewhere safe. It’s sad to see this many people on the street without a roof, or food, and just bags.

I mean they’re human beings, it’s not nice for them. I hope that whoever reads this that’s responsible for the city does something about it, please. They deserve it.
