Several hours after Sam took part in I Work in Town, Canal Street would have been bouncing.
The 28-year-old would have been at the centre of it, too. He’s the bar supervisor at Via, in the heart of the Village. When the MEN visits there are just staff present, setting up for a busy afternoon and evening’s trade.
Originally from a particularly concrete-affectionate portion of the Midlands, Sam Winter now calls Salford home. He’s right in the thick of it in town, now.

I don’t actually go anywhere, I’m always here, and everyone knows this place.
What’s your favourite view of the city or in the city?
I don’t know the name of the bridge, but wherever Taylor Swift’s [cut-out] is. Apparently she is staying.
Where’s best to go for your dinner in town?
Federal.
Where would you take someone to show them the real Manchester?
To Northern Quarter, it shows a lot of diversity and there’s all sorts there.
What’s your favourite Mancunian neighbourhood?
Ancoats, I just like the vibe of it with the canal next to it and everything on your doorstep.
What are the five words that best describe the city?
Different, exciting, welcoming, diversity… and that’s it.

Oooh, I’d have to go neither. I’m not from the North so I don’t want to start something.
Your favourite city pub is…?
Behind Closed Doors, it’s very, very nice.
Who is your favourite city ‘character’?
In the past, we had them, but we don’t anymore. They were called Sexy Lexi, but I can’t say what they’d get up to!
What’s the one thing you’d add or remove to Manchester if you could…
I’d just take away Piccadilly Gardens. The state after the Christmas Markets…
