My Dublin: The city according to pop singer Aimee

Home is...

I’m from Swords but I’m living in Lusk with my boyfriend. I love it that it's nicely just outside of Dublin.

We kind of live in the countryside, so it feels like a little bit of an escape, but we're also 15 minutes in the car away from Swords. My life is filled with being around a lot of people and being quite busy and always on the go, so I love having a getaway and quiet.

How I get around the city:

I drive my own car. I don't really enjoy public transport that much, so I was driving before I even finished school. The day I turned 17, I booked my tests. I was like, 'Right, I need to get a car - like, now'.

It took me two goes to get my test, which I was fuming about, but I got there in the end!

I love driving, and unless it's a mad day I always try to leave early because I don't like being stressed and rushing through town in the traffic. When you sit in the likes of LA traffic or New York traffic, I don't think you can ever complain about traffic here again.

The best place in the city for a date:

Grafton Street - we'd head into town and grab some food, have a nose around some shops, maybe walk up to Stephen's Green. I love being in town, I always think it's such a great buzz.

My favourite restaurant in Dublin:

There's a place called V-Face. Oh my god, the food!

I'm vegan almost six years now and people used to be like 'What is vegan?', but this is an entire vegan restaurant. We drive all the way into town just to get their food sometimes, because it's just so good.

It's definitely bold food - burgers, hotdogs... My favourite is a cheese toastie - vegan cheese, vegan pesto, and it's just to die for. You're eating it, going, 'How is this vegan?!'. It’s great for a hangover.

My go-to café or coffee shop:

There's a place in Skerries called Olive, and they do really, really good coffee. It's a cute little café, and that's definitely my local. It's really good, and it's right beside the sea

They do vegan sandwiches, wraps and pastries and loads of stuff. It's really good. It's not just a vegan café, but they've got loads of vegan options.

Where I get my exercise:

I walk a lot on the beach in Skerries, but I'm lucky to have my own gym here at home, so I would use that.

I took up skipping over lockdown, which is my absolute favourite thing to do now. I actually do that instead of the boring 20 minute run on the treadmill.

My favourite shops:

Urban Outfitters. It's a cool, modern twist on vintage clothing, and that's my style. And I love unisex clothes, so I'd shop a lot in the men's section. You're guaranteed to get some really cool pieces in Urban Outfitters.

My favourite place for a haircut or pampering session:

Red Velvet - it's a hair salon in Ballyboughal. They're really good, I've been going there for years and years.

I actually never went to a hairdresser until I was about 20 - me and my mam used to do each other's hair. So I never ventured out until I was, like, 20 and then I was like, 'I want to waste my money!'. And then you get addicted, of course.

I think my favourite kind of treatment or pampering is probably getting a facial. I go to a girl in Ashbourne - she does it from her home, it's called Light Wave Beauty.

My favourite place in Dublin to get away from it all:

It's always the beach – Skerries and Malahide are my two main ones. If I'm overworked or if I'm just exhausted with loads going on, it feels like a bit of a recharge.

You leave the house exhausted, you go for a nice, fresh walk on the beach and then all of a sudden you'll have loads of energy.

My favourite place to let my hair down:

Normally just town - we'll go into the likes of Opium, Xico, maybe House, Nolita... It really depends on the night.

They're grand because they are quite close [to each other] and you can walk between them.

The last live event I went to:

The last one would have been my own show in February. I performed in The Academy, and it was my first show since two years of nothing so it was absolutely amazing.

I was so worried that people would be quiet and nervous and not really kind of get into it because of covid and stuff like that, but everybody had the drinks, they were bopping around, singing the words of the songs, so it was amazing.

Dublin's best kept secret:

I don't know if it's a secret, but I love driving up to the Howth Summit. We went up there one night and it was a really, really clear night [so you could see] the lights all over the city.

We ended up lying on the bonnet of the car because it was a meteor shower. It was the first time in my life that I'd ever seen shooting stars, and I saw about 50. It's gorgeous up there.
