'My dog ate all my birth control pills - it was so awkward telling my vet'

Dog owners need to have eyes in the back of their heads, as they never quite know what their pooch is going to get up to next. A woman has revealed her embarrassment after calling up her vets to explain how her mischievous mutt ate his way through all of her birth control pills.

Speaking to Reddit, the woman said: "My dog came in my room while I was sleeping, got my birth control and ate it all. I didn’t notice until I was playing with him and found the package remains on the floor. I don’t know how I didn’t hear him come in and take them! I must’ve been sleeping really deeply which is very unlike me."

However, after speaking with her vet, the woman was pleased to hear her pet will be OK as her contraceptive pills are not toxic to dogs.

"I talked to a vet who said he probably will just be sick later because it isn’t toxic. He did have a big poop earlier - I just assumed he was dehydrated from the weather," she added.

"Poor dude - I feel awful! I usually put them away in my drawer but must’ve forgot when I last took them! I just wanted to share."

Sharing her story in hopes it "might help someone else to prevent this from happening to their dog", it turns out she isn't the only one who has had to ring the vets about their pet eating their contraception.

One user said: "My dog chewed up my birth control. The packet was empty but still had the placebo iron pills in the bottom row."

Another user added: "When I woke up, I found my box of the pills in her bed. I'm not sure how many she ate, but three pills are missing and I found pieces of it on the floor. Last three pills are placebos and I already used the first six pills."

A third user said: "This happened to me and my six-month-old basset hound a few years ago. I took her to the vet and all the vet said was to induce vomiting with some hydrogen peroxide.

"The vet said it wouldn't harm the dog because it was a low dose - don't worry. Look up how to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide - it will save you a £100 vet bill. The dog will be fine. I wish this was something I had known when my dog was a puppy."
