My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding twin's girlfriend wanted to have kids before 'suicide'

The devastated girlfriend of a My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star wanted him to "heal" before he died in a suspected suicide pact with his twin brother.

Family members believe Bill and Joe Smith were trying to hide their battle with depression before they were found dead together in a tree on an isolated country lane in Sevenoaks, Kent, on Saturday morning.

It has emerged Joe, a dad-of-two, had recently been diagnosed with cancer, which had come as a devastating blow for his brother Bill, who had told him: "I’d never be able to live without you."

In a series of heartbreaking posts on Facebook, Bill's girlfriend, Kristina Delaney, told how she wishes she "could have done more for you both" and how she had dreamt of having children with Bill, adding: "Please be happy now."

The 32-year-old twins' uncle found their bodies in a woodland, where they had played as youngsters, after they disappeared and worried family members found a note telling them where to look.

It is understood that relatives had privately raised concerns about the brothers in recent weeks.

Ms Delaney, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, said she and Bill were planning a big night out for New Year's Eve in central London.

She wrote on Facebook: "I’m gonna make you so so proud. You’re my happiness, my whole life.

Earlier, she wrote: "Hardest day of my life. RIP my perfect bill you were so pure so lovely. You made me the happiest girl.

"Did everything for me showed me love i never had you. Always see stuff like this but you just never think it’ll happen to you.

"I can’t believe I have to type this together struggling to speak never mind put a sentence together, I’m gonna make you so so proud my bill, my life, my angel joe.

"May you both get the best beds in heaven. Bill please please please be happy now I’m just persuading myself your happier.

"I know you wouldn’t me to cry but I am and I cry because I’m in pain you hated when I cried but also said how loved you felt."

Family members have told how they suspected both siblings were battling depression and "couldn't live without each other".

Phoebe Charleen Smith, a cousin, told the Telegraph: “Joey had cancer, and Billy told him 'I’d never be able to live without you'.

“Joey told the family he got the all-clear after chemo two months ago, but we don’t know if that’s true now.

“They went missing, and Joey’s phone was turned off. Then we found a note. It said that they wanted it like this, and we would find them in the woods where they played with the family years ago."

Just two weeks before they were found dead, the twins - described as "happy-go-lucky" - were seen dancing and singing to Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You in a video at a friend's wedding.

Wedding guests told how the brothers were in good spirits.

One wrote on Facebook: "Absolutely hilarious at that wedding. So entertaining having them on our table. Non stop laughter. RIP boys."

Phoebe, their cousin, also told PA: “They were perfect, we had been brought up all our lives together... more like brothers and sister. They are loved dearly and missed so much.”

Bill and Joe were working for their uncle's landscaping business and had recently stayed with friend Jane Chippendale in Tunbridge Wells for about two months.

She had never met the brothers until the owner of a local B&B, which was fully booked, brought them round to her house and asked if they could stay with her.

Mrs Chippendale said she last saw the twins a month ago when they moved out and told her they were going to live at an aunt's house.

They had just returned from a trip to Thailand after a busy summer of work, she said.

Mrs Chippendale told Mirror Online she was brought to tears when she looked at the twins' work boots and clothes, which they had left behind at her house, after being told of their deaths.

She said: "I'm still in shock. It doesn't make sense. Their clothes are hanging up in my wash room.

"They were like sons when they were here.

"They were so identical. It was hard to tell them apart.

"They asked if they could come round at Christmas, but I hadn't heard anything from them."

She added: "I have a cancer diagnosis. They sent me a message saying 'stay positive, you're going to outlive all of this'.

"The boys put up a fence for me at the back. They gave me cards for my birthday.

"We got close so quickly. They were so sweet.

"I can still see them smiling in front of me."

Heartbroken family, friends and members of the UK's travelling community have paid tribute to the siblings, with one writing on Facebook: "The love they had for one another. They couldt live with out one another." [sic]

Another wrote: "They both took their own lives. Depression is rife among our folki."

A third added: "Born together and left the earth together.

"Male depression really is as strong as any other and it should be made as aware as any other and they should feel like they can speak up like any other person the demons won these beautiful life’s." [sic]

The brothers gained notoriety from their appearances on reality TV (Facebook)

The twins, who were Romani gypsies, appeared in the third series of the Channel 4 reality TV programme My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

In one episode, a camera crew followed the gardeners around during a shift in Kent and showed them at their grandmother Phoebe's home, where they lived at the time.

They discussed the traveller lifestyle and pitfalls of marriage, and then flew to Tenerife for a final holiday before they were expected to get married and start families.

Paddy Doherty, the Celebrity Big Brother winner and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star, asked his fans to pray for the Smith twins' family, including their parents and grandmother.

He said in a Facebook video: "Two good looking boys, God bless themselves.

"That’s a terrible tragedy. Pray for the boys’ family.

"I’m very, very sorry for your troubles.

"May God have mercy and God look after them."

Kent Police said the deaths are not currently being treated as suspicious.

Billy Welch, national spokesman for Britain’s Romani community, said there are high suicide rates within the travelling population.

He told the Telegraph that Romani people and travellers "often suffer in silence" and the deaths should serve as a "wake-up call".

In 2017, a survey by the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that gypsies, travellers and Roma suffer “poorer mental health than the rest of the population in Britain” and were “more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression”.
