'My aunt accused me of body shaming when she asked to wear white to my wedding'

When a couple get married in front of their friends and family they often like to be the centre of attention – and there are various unwritten rules in place to ensure this happens.

For example, even if there isn't a strict dress code in place, it's normally generally accepted that a white dress is a no-go for a guest, unless the couple have explicitly said it's okay.

However, one bride-to-be was baffled when her aunt took offence to her asking the relative's daughter not to wear white to the wedding – and even accused her of body shaming the teen.

The bride, who had told her family member that they had a lilac theme, had asked her cousin not to wear white – but the aunt told her she was selfish for not letting her wear the dress she wanted.

Explaining the situation on online forum Reddit, the 28-year-old explained that her aunt, 42, had started shopping for her 15-year-old daughter's dress. When the aunt asked her what type of dress she should look for, the bride suggested lilac, to go with the "lilac-white" theme.

In the recent forum post, she explained: "She sent me a few dresses they picked out. They were all beautiful, but white. I told her that I liked them, but that I didn't like the fact they were white. She asked me if I can make an exception, since her daughter (let's call her Macy) is family. I apologised and said I'd be happier if they picked a different colour."

The aunt said it was 'unfair' because the brides were both wearing white (stock image) (Getty Images)

The aunt explained that her daughter "doesn't like purple", but the bride-to-be ensured her the dress didn't need to be purple, because not everyone needed to match the theme of the wedding.

She continued: "She called me, telling me that I'm selfish for not letting Macy wear that dress, and apparently am 's**t shaming her' because it's a little revealing. I never said anything about that, neither did I think the dress was even revealing, like I said, as long as they're comfortable. She hung up on me and later asked me to go out for coffee and talk about it."

The aunt later apologised for her comments, but still "didn't feel it was fair" that her daughter couldn't wear white – and added that the teen had "cried" because of it. She also added that the wedding was already "untraditional" because both the brides would be wearing white.

The bride-to-be called her cousin to apologise, and she had said she had "no problem" wearing a different dress, and apologised for her mum. After hearing this, the woman called her aunt to univite her from the wedding.

Many fellow forum users supported the woman, with one person saying: "You did the right thing."

Another added: "She got uninvited for lying and using her daughter to make a scene."

A third added: "She literally has every choice in the world besides white, if it comes down to it. Doesn't like purple, compliment with green instead. Go formal black if need be. How about pastel pink, which is close?"
