Unexploded sea mine found on Scottish beach as bomb squad called

BOMB disposal experts have been called to the Shetland Islands as a mussel farmer has found a suspected mine.

Police Scotland and the coastguard were called to the coast of Yell shortly after 6.30am on Wednesday to the report of a suspected sea mine.

Staff at a mussel farm at Da Herra Station, Whalefirth, reportedly discovered the potential explosive while out sampling.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team has been requested to attend a "possible item of ordnance".

The Coastguard told The Shetland Times that it had cordoned off the area while waiting for the bomb disposal team to arrive.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
