The Muslim Women’s Art Festival will be heading to the Whitworth Gallery next month. Part of the larger Muslim Arts and Culture festival - aka MACFEST - it starts on March 4, and encompasses more than 20 events, running up until June.
Launch day will be packed with activities, including calligraphy workshops, henna painting, hijab styling sessions, card making workshops, face painting for kids and marble painting. There will also be a host of art exhibitions, from local artists including Atefeh Seifi, Natalia Stefurak, Ashfia Ashrif, Rahela Khan, Sheba Arts, Asuman Dokuzlu and Yaran North West Manchester.

Live performances on the day will come from the Turkish Folk Dance group, poetry from Amir Arshad and Lydia Merrill, and a set by the Sufi Hip Hop group, along with an introductory address by festival founder Qaisra Shahraz MBE and others by Ed Watts, head of learning and engagement at the Whitworth and Diane Hawkins, Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester.
March 8 will see the festival celebrate International Women’s Day with talks from guest speakers on subjects including Muslim women’s movements and three centuries of travel writing from Muslim women.
MACFEST launched last weekend, and is now in its fifth year. It runs up until July, and features a wealth of events and activities, encompassing art, literature, photography, architecture music and film.
