In just some of the latest cases before the courts, we reported on a murderer who was jailed for life for leaving his victim with nearly 200 injuries, and revealed the sordid details of a brothel keeper who trafficked prostitutes around the UK.
Meanwhile, two prolific shoplifters were jailed in separate cases heard before the magistrates' court, and banned from certain stores.

Murderer jailed
David Jackson was jailed for life for the murder of 27-year-old Mckyla Taylor in the bedroom of a flat in Lowtown Street, Worksop, in the early hours of August 16, 2022. The young mum had suffered 199 separate injuries to her head and body, with forensic evidence showing most of these had been inflicted inside the property's bedroom by two screwdrivers discovered in the living room.
Jackson, 68, Lowtown Street, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court. Read the full story here
Brothel keeper trafficked prostitutes around UK snared by texts
Jie Ke Wang, 48, arranged for women to be trafficked around the UK as prostitutes. He earned £500-a-week operating a "callout service" - where clients would request a woman be sent to their address for sex work.
He would store contacts in his phone not as names but as areas such as Cov (Coventry) and Not (Nottingham).
Wang admitted arranging travel of someone with a view to exploitation and was jailed for four years and five months on Wednesday, May 24. Read the full story here
Shoplifter targeted Co-op and Farmfoods to fund addiction
Laura Dyer, of Eccleston Drive, Clifton, stole over £400 worth of meat and laundry items across six thefts between 2 March and 7 May 2023. The 34-year-old targeted the Co-Op at Bridgeway Centre, The Meadows, and Farmfoods in Southchurch Drive, Clifton, in order to fund her drug addiction, according to Nottinghamshire Police.
She appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on May 24, 2023, and admitted six counts of theft and was jailed for six months. Read the full story here

Nottinghamshire man slashed woman's throat leaving her in a coma
Laurence Griffiths, 42, was jailed for life after violently beating a woman and slashing her throat. He claimed to have been high on drugs and alcohol when he attacked the victim at his home in Loughborough Road, West Bridgford, on July 25 last year.
He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and received the life sentence, with a minimum term of 12 years. Read the full story here
Two shoplifters jailed
Two prolific shoplifters were banned from entering stores and handed jail time. Rebecca Williams, 29, of Alberta Terrace, Sherwood Rise, stole items from Co-op stores in Sherwood and Carrington on multiple occasions from 22 April until 25 May this year – including meat, cheese, chocolate and laundry products.
The 29-year-old, of Alberta Terrace, Sherwood Rise, also stole face care products from The V Spot, in Mansfield Road, Sherwood, on 6 April. She was subsequently arrested and charged with 13 counts of theft.
Williams appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on May 26 and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to all charges. She was also given a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which prohibits her from entering the three stores, and ordered to pay £150 compensation.
A second prolific shoplifter, Lindsay Gregory stole items from the Co-op at Bridgeway Centre, The Meadows, on 13 occasions between 3 April and 25 May this year – including meat, cheese, coffee and washing detergent.
The 37-year-old, of Houseman Gardens, The Meadows, also targeted the Co-op at Sneinton Dale on 21 and 22 May.
She also appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on May 26 and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to all charges. A four-month suspended prison sentence for previous offences was also activated, increasing the custodial sentence to 10 months.
Gregory was also given a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which prohibits her from entering the two Co-op stores she targeted in her latest stealing spree. Read the full story here
