A murderer who is serving a minimum prison term of 30 years at HMP Frankland slashed a fellow prisoner in the face with a craft knife.
Jamie Davison was sentenced to life in prison in July last year for murdering a man in Carlisle, and has been serving his sentence at the category A men's prison in Brasside, County Durham. But less than a year into his sentence on April 11 this year, the 28-year-old carried out a gruesome slashing attack on a fellow prisoner, causing a "gaping wound".
Davison appeared at Durham Crown Court via link from the prison to be sentenced for section 18 wounding with intent. He had pleaded guilty to the charge.

Paul Cross, prosecuting, said: "This is a case of a prisoner slashing another prisoner in the face with a craft knife, which he then threw into an adjacent cell. The wound goes all the way down the victim's face and round the corner of his jaw. Afterwards, the defendant said: 'I'm sick of being bullied'." The court heard that the victim of the slashing refused to co-operate with authorities or be interviewed about the attack.
Brendan Burke, defending, said: "The only real mitigation is his plea of guilt, foreshadowed by his immediate admission at his own cell minutes after the incident was committed."
Sentencing Davison, Judge Jo Kidd said the prisoner had a number of "significant" previous convictions, the most serious being his murder conviction last year, of which he must serve a minimum term of 30 years. She said: "The circumstances of this offence are that in the early part of your sentence, you approached a fellow prisoner in the association room of HMP Frankland armed with a craft knife. The victim was standing away with his back to you, giving him no indication he was to be attacked. You approached him, produced the knife and injured him, drawing the knife from the top side of his face, culminating near the jaw. It caused a gaping wound."
The judge imposed a 56 month consecutive prison sentence, which he must serve after his 30 year minimum term. Davison will be in his 60s when he is eligible for parole.
