Murderer sank teeth into Lanarkshire prison officer's thigh amid pool table brawl

A murderer sank his teeth into a prison guard's thigh after threatening to kill officers at a Lanarkshire prison.

Stevie Angus refused to go back to his cell before carnage erupted at HMP Shotts in January 2020.

The 34-year-old leapt onto a pool table, paced across it and brandished a cue as he told staff: 'I'm going to kill you'.

Guards were able to control the evil killer but, in the process, he bit officer Tara Jackson on the inside of her left thigh, which caused bruising.

Angus, from Aberdeen, was put in segregation for three-and-a-half months and had all privileges removed.

He appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted assault as well as threatening or abusive behaviour in January 2020.

Angus was jailed for 17 years for the murder of Aaron Arthur in Aberdeen in 2012.

Sheriff Linda Nicolson handed Angus, now being held in HMP Low Moss, an extra year but told him it would run alongside his current sentence.

The court heard his earliest release date is in 2030 and that he hopes to be moved to a jail closer to his Newcastle home.

Depute Fiscal Paul Jamieson said: "The accused refused to go behind his cell door to allow his section to be locked up and thereafter climbed on top of the pool table and began to pace around on top of it.

"An officer requested for others to attend but the accused shouted a number of threats towards them.

"Due to the level of threat a few officers drew their batons and the accused who had a pool cue was swinging it round at officers and brandishing it.

"He was eventually apprehended and taken to the floor but continued to fight them and in the process bit Tara Jackson on the inside of her upper left thigh before he was brought under control."

Ian Scott, defending, said: "There was no serious injury done and this seems to have been a flare up of his mental health where he jumped on the pool table to get attention.

"He wanted to speak to a governor because he felt this issue was being untreated."

Sheriff Nicolson said: "There is no alternative other than a custodial sentence."

Angus stabbed Arthur to death during an unprovoked attack in a flat in Aberdeen in December 2012 as his victim lay defenceless in bed.

The brutal slaying came moments after he had posted on Facebook stating he was planning to kill someone.

He denied any wrongdoing but was convicted by a jury and jailed in August 2013.

In 2015, Angus was caught with a metal spike inside his cell at HMP Shotts but claimed he was using it to fix a music system.
