Murderer's brother to fight allegations he assaulted a journalist outside court

The brother of South Australian murderer Matthew Tilley will fight allegations he assaulted a former television reporter and cameraman on two separate occasions, a court has heard.

Daniel Bernard Tilley, 52, is accused of assaulting former Nine reporter Tom Angley and smashing his microphone outside the Supreme Court in March.

Mr Tilley attended court to support his brother, who had just been sentenced for murdering mother-of-two Suzanne Poll at a Salisbury stationery shop in 1993.

Matthew Tilley was given a life sentence with a non-parole period of 26 years for the murder.

He was not arrested until 2019, when detectives secured a family DNA link to blood spatter at the crime scene after Daniel Tilley tossed a disposable coffee cup into a bin at Daylesford in western Victoria.

Detectives retrieved the cup and analysed it against DNA from the stationery shop.

At trial, prosecutors told jurors the DNA showed Matthew Tilley was "100 billion times" more likely to be the matching person than any other person.

Daniel Tilley is also accused of assaulting Seven cameraman Jan Halskov outside the Supreme Court in September, after his brother launched an appeal against his conviction for the cold case murder.

An outcome of the appeal is still pending.

Today, Daniel Tilley – who was unrepresented — told the Adelaide Magistrates Court he would fight the assault charges but would admit to smashing the Nine microphone.

"I can't afford a lawyer – they want too much money," Mr Tilley told Magistrate Simon Smart.

His case was listed for another hearing in January.
