A teenager who was fighting for life in hospital for more than a week after being stabbed in the head has died, triggering a murder investigation.

Tasmania Police confirmed a murder investigation was underway after the 19-year-old man died on Saturday.

Emergency services were called a Hobart property about 11.30pm on March 11, where they found the teen unconscious and non-responsive.

He spent a week fighting for his life before succumbing to his injuries.

"The young man has received a stab wound to the head. A police investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding this incident," Detective Acting Inspector Nicholas Bowden said.

"Detectives are following a specific line of inquiry," he said.

"Investigations indicate that the person or people responsible and the victim knew each other, and that this was an isolated incident."

He called on anyone with information to come forward, especially anyone who saw anything or had footage of a small four-door sedan, possibly silver in colour, in the area of Dickson Street at the time.
