Police have launched a murder probe after a 30-year-old woman died in Croydon, south London.

Officers were called to a property on Bensham Lane, Thornton Heath, at around 7pm on Monday to reports of an unresponsive woman.

Despite the efforts of medics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men, aged 21 and both of whom are known to the woman, have been arrested on suspicion of her murder. They remain in custody.

Detectives said the woman’s family was aware of her death, but that formal identification was yet to take place.

Met Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain said: “We are saddened to hear about the loss of this young woman. We are currently supporting her family while they process this shocking news.

“At this early stage, we believe that the two men were known to the woman and there is no threat to the wider public.

“I understand the impact this incident will have on the community and we are doing everything in our power to investigate the circumstances of what happened.

“Throughout the day you may notice a higher police presence in the area, please do voice any concerns to officers.

“Although we have made two arrests, we still need to have an understanding as to what took place last night in Bensham Lane.

“Did you hear anything unusual? Did you see anyone leaving the property? If you did, then please do the right thing and speak with us.”

A post-mortem was due to take place later on Tuesday.

It comes as police separately launched a murder probe into the death of a 43-year-woman at a flat in Woolwich on Friday evening.

Detectives leading that case said Marianne Kilonzi, who worked as a banker for Citi, was thought to have been beaten to death at a property in Argyll Road.

Officers are hunting a suspect, thought to be known to Ms Kilonzi, over her death, but no arrests have yet been made.

Anyone with information about the death of the woman in Bensham Lane, Croydon case is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5952/20Jan.
