Murder inquiry launched after Wallsend stabbing - with three teenagers arrested

Northumbria Police has launched a murder investigation after a 43-year-old man died following a suspected assault on Monday in the Holy Cross area of Wallsend.

Three male teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder - and the cops said they remained in custody.

Emergency services including the police, the North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance attended the scene in St Hilda's Avenue. The police were alerted by the ambulance service to the incident shortly before 2.30pm. The man was pronounced dead and the scene - and his next-of-kin have been informed.

The police said the man was found by emergency services with "serious injuries", and his loved ones are currently being supported by specialist family liaison officers. In a statement, the force said: "Shortly before 2.30pm today (Monday), police were alerted by the ambulance service that a man had been injured on St Hilda’s Avenue, Holy Cross

Det Insp Louise Jenkins added: "Firstly, our thoughts go out to the victim’s family and friends at this devastating time. A full investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding what led to this tragic incident.

"It is early in the investigation however, we don’t believe there is any wider threat to the public. Our officers remain in the area as they continue to follow several lines of enquiry, and I’d encourage anybody with any concerns or information to get in touch.”

During the afternoon as the scale of the crime scene became clear, neighbours in the estate told ChronicleLive how shocked they had been by the violence. One woman living nearby said: "You just don't expect this to happen. You don't expect it at all, but especially not in the middle of the day. Not at the time your kids are coming out of school."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of the force's website or by calling 101 and quoting log NP-20220622-0535.
