Three men have been charged with murder after a 34-year-old man died from multiple stab wounds following an alleged altercation in northern Tasmania.

Police were called to a street in George Town on Saturday night with reports of a disturbance between four people allegedly known to each other.

A man from nearby Mount Direction was provided with medical help but died at the scene.

Police on Monday charged three George Town men, aged 30, 32 and 37, with murder.

They have been remanded in custody and were scheduled to appear on Monday night during an after-hours session of the Launceston Magistrates Court.
