Murder charge laid against man arrested over death of Sheena Fairfield in Leanyer

A 56-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of business owner and mother Sheena Fairfield, whose body was found by her husband in the front yard of their home in Darwin's northern suburbs last week.

Police said Ms Fairfield, 39, was found with multiple injuries "caused by a sharp-edged type weapon" when her husband arrived at their home in Leanyer on Thursday afternoon.

She had lived in the home with her husband, Mick Fairfield, and their young daughter.

NT Police have said the alleged attacker and Ms Fairfield knew each other but the pair were not related.

The man had been detained by police and was under guard at the Royal Darwin Hospital after emerging from a stand-off at a Rosebery property early on Friday morning.

In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, police said the man had been charged with murder.

It is understood he has been discharged from the Royal Darwin Hospital and is now remanded in custody. He will face the Darwin Local Court on Wednesday.

Tributes flow after tragic death

Police were first called to the property around 5:30pm Thursday after Mr Fairfield discovered her body out the front of their home.

She was pronounced dead by emergency services shortly after, with Detective Senior Sergeant Morrissey saying investigators believed she had been attacked at around 2:30pm.

He said members of the Territory Response Group (TRG) then went to a residence in Rosebery on Friday morning, where there was "some negotiation to make [the 56-year-old man] come out".

The man was taken to hospital with wounds that police believe were self-inflicted.

Police called for anyone who saw a silver Nissan Navara duel cab ute with an orange witches hat in the back near the Leanyer area at around 2:30pm on Thursday to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Ms Fairfield and her husband co-owned Territory Butchers in the Hibiscus Shopping Centre in Leanyer, where business owners voiced shock and despair at her death.

Her husband Mick also paid tribute, saying "her smile won me over that's for sure".

"[She was] very loving and caring to all people, even the grumpy ones," he told the ABC.
