Police have laid a murder charge after a woman's body was found in the same hotel room as a man who suffered cuts to his arms.

Authorities attended a hotel in Penrith, in western Sydney, on Sunday afternoon after someone discovered the body in a hotel room.

The man, who had cuts to his arms, was treated by paramedics and transported to Sydney's Westmead Hospital in critical condition.

On Tuesday, police, - who had kept the man under their guard while he stayed in hospital, - charged the 53-year-old with murder.

He appeared in court from his hospital bed on Tuesday and was refused bail.

He is set to face Penrith Local Court on Wednesday.

The woman, who is yet to be formally identified, was believed to have been aged 50.
