A man has faced court after being charged over the stabbing murder of a homeless man in Melbourne's north.

Shane Jackson, 42, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday, when dates were set for his next hearing.

Police said they arrested the Broadmeadows man on Tuesday after being called to a stabbing on Warnock Street in the suburb about 2pm.

They found a 32-year-old man, of no fixed address, dead outside a property.

Jackson was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.

Police believe Jackson and victim knew each other.

Jackson appeared in court briefly before he was taken into custody. He will next face court on November 1.

It comes after another four people were found dead at a home at Broadmeadows on Tuesday in an unrelated incident.

Investigators are considering whether drug overdoses and carbon monoxide poisoning were involved.

A relative found the four people - three males aged 37, 32 and 17, and a 42-year-old woman - dead on Tuesday morning.

There was no suggestion violence led to their deaths.
