A man has been charged with murder after being accused of forcing his way into a north Queensland unit and repeatedly stabbing someone.

Lar Sue, 31, has been remanded in custody after his matter appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Sue is accused of forcing entry into the Kirwan unit after 4.30pm on Monday before allegedly stabbing a 26-year-old man he knew multiple times, leaving a "violent scene".

The man was treated by emergency services but died at the property.

He suffered multiple wounds to the torso, with police seizing an "edged" weapon at the unit.

"It's certainly a violent scene to walk in to," Detective Acting Inspector Chris Caswell told reporters on Tuesday.

"We have seized an item we suspect is the item involved."

Police said a woman was in the unit at the time and witnessed the attack.

She was not injured and was not a suspect, Det Insp Caswell said.

"She's with detectives today going through the investigative process but as you can imagine it's obviously a confronting ... thing to witness," he said.

Sue has also been charged with entering a dwelling to commit an offence.

A duty lawyer appeared on Sue's behalf when the case was mentioned in Townsville Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

It was adjourned for committal mention on August 2 and Sue was remanded in custody.
