Munster and Leinster switch fixtures to allow Thomond Park clash to go ahead

Leinster and Munster have switched their remaining regular URC season fixtures to ensure the sides can meet at Thomond Park.

The Reds' were due to host a meeting of the provinces during the final round of the regular season in May.

But there was a high possibility that the ground would be unavailable as stadium bosses had committed to hosting two Ed Sheeran gigs on May 5 and 6.

To accommodate the fixture, the home and away sequence for the showdowns between the rivals has been switched.

Munster will now be the home team in Round 15, hosting Leinster at Thomond Park on Saturday, April 2 at 7pm.

The game at Aviva Stadium was initially fixed for the same night but will now be played there on the weekend of May 20/21 with the kick-off to be confirmed by URC in the coming weeks.

For the Thomond Park encounter, Munster Rugby’s season tickets and 10 year tickets will be valid for the rescheduled game with no need for any action.

A pre-sale period will be available to those who purchased tickets for the originally scheduled fixture, and details will be sent directly to supporters this afternoon.

General tickets for the game will go on sale at 11am on Friday with further details to follow on munsterrugby.ie.

The date and time of the Aviva Stadium clash will be confirmed once the schedule for all round 18 games have been agreed with broadcasters and teams.

Again, Leinster season ticket holders do not need to take any action and their tickets will automatically be updated to reflect the change in dates.

Supporters that purchased match tickets for the game at Aviva Stadium on April 2 will be contacted directly by Ticketmaster to confirm the date change and options available to them.

Leinster Rugby CEO Mick Dawson commented: “This was not a straight forward process by any means but the reality is that we were approached by the IRFU and Munster Rugby with a view to facilitating a switch in dates for the two games.

“We understand that there will be disappointment in particular amongst Leinster Rugby fans who have been planning for the game on April 2, but a solution needed to be found for that fixture in May with Thomond Park unavailable.

“The past few seasons have been difficult on us all and flexibility and working to find solutions in ever-changing scenarios has become the reality for all organisations and that is the case here also.

"We were faced with a dilemma and we worked hard together to find a solution that ensures that Leinster Rugby and Munster Rugby supporters will enjoy two great days out in Aviva Stadium and Thomond Park.

“We now have a full fixture list in the United Rugby Championship and in the Champions Cup with plenty of big games, and big interpro games at that, to look forward to.”

And Munster Rugby CEO Ian Flanagan said: “Following a thorough consultation process between Munster Rugby, Leinster Rugby and the IRFU I believe we have reached the best possible outcome in this situation.

“We have all done exceptionally well in adapting to challenging and unique circumstances over the last two years in an ever-changing landscape and we are grateful to our partners and supporters for their ongoing support and understanding.

“We are appreciative of the efforts of Leinster Rugby, the URC and broadcasters in working with us to find a practical solution for hosting our rescheduled Thomond Park game that was postponed over Christmas.”
