Mumbles Pier fire: Massive blaze breaks out as black smoke billows across Swansea

Emergency services are battling with a huge fire yards from an historical pier with plumes of smoke visible for miles.

Old Cinderella's nightclub at Mumbles Pier in Swansea, south Wales, is alight with reports people are being evacuated.

South Wales Police said they were called at 11.30am, with the dozens of firefighters also on the scene. Seven fire engines are in attendance.

The fire is understood to be contained and the fire has not spread onto the pier.

A force spokesman said: "Local road closures have been put in place and the public is advised to avoid the area while the fire is being tackled."

A statement from Mumbles Pier says: "Due to unforeseen circumstances the site will be closed from now until further notice. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

People have been warned not to climb the nearby hill on Bracelet Bay.

One of the most iconic and best loved piers in Wales, Mumbles has welcomed families since 1898.

Crews from Morriston, Tumble, Swansea Central, Port Talbot, Neath, Carmarthen and Cardigan were all called to help with the incident.

A fire service statement read: "Incident is currently ongoing and crews are still on scene."

The Victorian structure was opened in 1898 and boasts a lifeboat slipway and boathouse, as well as a popular fishing platform.

A coastguard statement read: "Fire continues - please avoid the area. And do not attempt to climb the hill on Bracelet bay.

"For those in the Limeslade area it would be beneficial to close doors and windows while the fire at the back of the pier is extinguished due to the smoke and fumes in the area."

The pier has recently been undergoing major refurbishment - with the wooden planks along the pier being replaced.

Earlier this year the pier secured £1.85 million of funding for major new developments.

Chairman of Ameco, the company that owns the pier, Bert Bollom, said: “Mumbles Pier has always been entirely privately funded and this much-needed injection will allow us to continue to do business while making further and much-needed restoration works to return the pier back to its former glory.

"This money will ensure we can carry out the works and remain open for business, securing the future of our 130 staff members and all our customers.”

Old Cinderella's nightclub closed its doors in 2005 and has been used as a community venue ever since.
