Mum wins competition for new cake on sale at Birds Bakery shops

A mum has won a competition to design a new Halloween product to be sold in 63 Birds Bakery stores across the East Midlands. Lauren Milner wowed a panel of judges with her 'Pumpkin Puff', a spooky take on a classic cream puff.

The cake is filled with chocolate orange cream, covered with orange icing and finished with green chocolate on top for the pumpkin stalk. The ‘Get Your Bake On’ competition launched during the summer, encouraging cake enthusiasts to share their designs on social media.

Lauren, from Derby, will not only see her creation in stores - including the recently opened Teal Park branch in Netherfield, but has also received a Birds' Burgundy Card entitling her to free Birds goodies throughout the year.

The keen amateur baker said: "As soon as I saw the competition, I knew I wanted to do something around a pumpkin. I didn’t want to venture too far from what Birds is about – I thought it best to stick to an original, well-loved classic and give it a twist. The cream puff is the perfect shape for a pumpkin and as chocolate orange is my favourite flavour, it was a no brainer.

“My partner and little girl are so excited about free Birds for a year, but as I bake quite a lot at home, mainly cupcakes and cookies, I’m most excited to actually see the Pumpkin Puff come to life!”

Mike Holling, sales and marketing director at Birds Bakery, said: "We love to celebrate each season at Birds, from our chocolate frogs for Valentine’s Day, to our gingerbread reindeers at Christmas. We knew it was time to add something a bit different to our Halloween range, and who better to ask than our customers?

“Our bakers had so much fun creating Lauren’s winning design and it’s been great to have her in store to see her drawing become a reality. We can’t wait to see the reaction of customers when the Pumpkin Puff hits the shelves this week just in time for Halloween.”

Birds’ Halloween range is available in all stores now, featuring a wide range of spooky treats including Gingerbread Mummies, Chocolate Pumpkins and Ghost Chocolate Lollies. Lauren’s Pumpkin Cream Puff will run as an exclusive alongside the range from October 28 until October 31.
