Mum urged to rethink baby name as some say it reminds them of Sesame Street character

Finding the perfect baby name for your little one isn't always an easy task, and it's becoming more and more difficult to find a name that doesn't make people think of a TV show, a film, or a famous person.

And while some parents will make a conscious decision to name their children after a famous or fictional person with the same name, others end up doing it by accident - and can sometimes be left regretting the unintended link.

One mum recently shared the name she was thinking of giving her son and was told by several people to rethink the choice after it turned out her little one would share the same name as a Sesame Street character, which may not be the ideal choice when it comes to namesakes.

The woman revealed she wanted to name her son Oscar, and while the name may sound perfectly normal to most people, some were concerned her child would be compared to Oscar the Grouch, the furry green Muppets character who lived in a rubbish bin and appeared on the children's TV series, Sesame Street.

In a post on Reddit, the mum-to-be wrote: "Thoughts on the name Oscar? My husband and I are considering it for our next baby if it's a boy. I love that it's not super common and I think it would be cute for a baby and would age well for an adult.

"I think the only thing I'm iffy about is that it has a bit of a harsh sound, which I'm not generally crazy about. Would love to hear what others think about the name!"

The woman didn't specify where she's from, but commenters pointed out that in countries such as the UK, Oscar is actually one of the top 10 most popular names for boys, whereas, in the US, it doesn't even make the top 200.

And for those who weren't as familiar with the name, the Sesame Street connection was all they could think about.

One person said: "I think of the Grouch, for sure. It's not super popular but isn't weird, so that's cool. I just don't think it sounds nice."

While another added: "All I can think of is Sesame Street."

Other commenters also said the name was often used for people's pets, with Oscar ranking as one of the most popular names for both cats and dogs.

Someone wrote: "I think it’s a dog's name, or just associated with Oscar the Grouch."

As another said: "I like it, but a lot of people call their cats Oscar apparently, but that might just be my area. It has a vibe of a name everyone knows but no one's using which I love."

Not everyone had something negative to say about the name though, as there were many commenters who said they loved the name and were thinking of using it themselves.

"It's on my list, I love it!", one posted.

A second commenter said: "I love the name Oscar. It gives out a wise, loving and kind vibe to me."

While a third noted: "I just named my September baby Oscar so I am biased. We get lots of great feedback on it. Mandy Moore also just used the name for her son born recently."
