Mum urged not to use 'terrible' baby name to 'save daughter embarrassment'

Choosing a baby name isn't always an easy task if you don't have a clear favourite or you and your partner can't quite see eye to eye on any names that you consider.

One mum-to-be struggling to pick a name decided to post her list of suggestions online after receiving "mixed reactions" from family members, but soon realised that it wasn't just her family that wasn't keen on the monikers - as strangers also told her that some of her options were "terrible".

The mum, who said she was expecting her first daughter, posted a list of potential names including Alicen, Theia, Eridan, Arielle, Exa, Angelana, and Vierra, and was told that while some of her choices were fine, others were trying too hard to be unique with their spellings.

In a post on Reddit, the woman wrote: "I'm currently pregnant with my first daughter and I've had these names in my head since the beginning of my pregnancy. I love them but I don't want them to sound ridiculous. I've asked other people in my life for their opinions and I've gotten mixed reactions, so here I am asking strangers for your opinions and what you would think if an adult told you they had any of these names."

Her full list of names was: Jolianna/Jolie, Alicen, Adrian, Theia, Ave, Sarie, Eridan, Briette, Kalina, Chloe Jayne, Exa, Audrina, Arielle, Angelana, Giji, and Vierra.

Most commenters were not a fan of the names on her list, especially ones such as "Alicen" which was supposed to be pronounced as Alison but had an unusual spelling.

One person said: "I'm gonna be brutally honest here. Alicen, Sarie, Eridan, Briette, Exa, and Giji are all terrible. Please do not name your daughter any of those."

While another added: "F**k Alicen right out the front door. Name her Allison. Nobody wants to deal with your 'she's so special' nonsense."

And a third posted: "Not gonna lie some of those names look like you put all your Scrabble game tiles in the bag and then pulled random letters out to make them spell something."

The mum took the criticism on board though, even admitting that some of her name choices were "cringey".

She posted: "It does make me cringe a little. I didn't think [Alicen] through - same with Angelana. For context it was Alice originally (which I love) but my husband told me that it sounded 'too old' so I added an N at the end as a compromise so that she could have Alice as a nickname. It wasn't one of those 'it's so unique' moments, I promise you, just bad taste on my part. It's just Alice or Alison now."

And in another comment, she added: "I appreciate that so much, thank you for saving my daughter the embarrassment."

The woman also updated her main post to say that she "should've thought about these names way more before uploading my list on here", and said she was now considering some alternatives.

She said she had swapped out Alicen for the more common Alison spelling and had switched Adrian for Adriana. She insisted she still liked Kalina and Thea, but was now also considering Avery.
