Mum turns boring bathroom into stylish space using £2 B&M and charity shop bargains

When Eszter Platthy moved into her Stockport home last November, the entire property was painted a dull and unimaginative magnolia. The 44-year-old wanted to put her own stamp on the new home, and decided to tackle the transformation room by room - starting with the small upstairs bathroom.

Transforming a small bathroom into a pretty place can feel like an impossible task due to a lack of space, but Eszter was desperate to ditch the dark grey industrial-style floor and add some greenery.

Revamping on a budget isn’t always easy, but the mum-of-two has managed to achieve a stunning new look using bargains from B&M and charity shops, costing less than £50 in total.

Eszter, who works as a private house cleaner, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: “The house was newly decorated, nice and clean. However, it was not my style and I wanted to put my own stamp on it. It’s quite common for houses to be painted in a magnolia shade, and that was the case with my property.

“I wasn’t sure how to go about it so I began with some research and got inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram. I liked how people had used small plants to add colour to their rooms, and also people were using stick-on floor tiles to revamp their floors on a budget. I hated the dark grey industrial-style floor so I knew that had to change.

“When I was researching supplies and gathering inspirational materials, I knew I would need to stick to a tight budget. We couldn’t afford to spend a fortune, especially on a little toilet room. I knew that if I was going to buy paint, for example, it would be wise to get a shade I could use in other rooms of the house to avoid wasting any leftover paint.”

Eszter used a £16 pot of paint from Homebase in the shade Stormy Sky to create a feature wall. “Already the room looked much better after painting just the single wall,” she said. “It was easy to do as well. I only spent 30 minutes painting the wall, it only needed one coat and once it was dry no further work was needed.”

The savvy shopper opted to leave the other two walls the original magnolia colour to save buying another pot of paint.

“The other main step was transforming the flooring,” she continued. “I spent some time researching online for good quality stick on floor tiles or vinyl which were easy enough to apply that I could do it myself.

“When I was researching patterns I had the colour scheme of grey-cream and light wood in my head. In the end, I found the perfect set and paid just £20 for the number of tiles I needed.”

It took the mum two evenings to lay the floor while her two daughters were in bed, taking around six hours after all. With the two biggest jobs done, she was then able to add the finishing touches, using bargains from B&M and the charity shop.

She added: “I found some lovely little shelves in B&M - they were on sale, £4 for two. I also found some artificial and real plants while I was there, they cost £10 altogether. Finally I found a ‘toilet rules’ plaque in a charity shop for £2.

“My husband helped to seal the vinyl with silicone after I was done. And he put the shelves on the wall as I can’t use the drill, but apart from that I did everything else myself. I’m very pleased with the results and excited to decorate the rest of my house.”

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, added: “Eszter has done a great job transforming her bathroom for just £50. You wouldn’t think it had cost this little to decorate it - the flooring and feature wall look very high quality.”
