Mum takes to Mumsnet to blast neighbours who 'treat garden like a living room'

A mum who could not enjoy her weekend has blasted "loud" neighbours who treat their garden "like a living room".

The woman took to online forum Mumsnet to say her area had been "blissfully quiet" over the last 20 years, but the arrival of new neighbours has brought much disruption. She quickly asked for advice after spotting her neighbours had used the "courtyard as another room of the house".

With the warm weather in parts of the UK over the Easter weekend, the woman was furious when her peaceful plans were quickly disturbed. The woman added she can hear the noise while inside with her windows closed.

In her online post, she wrote: "I realise this could be entitlement/snobbery/nimbyism, hence looking for a genuine perspective on whether I am being unreasonable.

"We live in a quiet, semi-rural steading conversion, so a smallish cluster of houses in converted farm buildings. We’ve lived here for 20+ years, and it has always been blissfully quiet. Two years ago the last working farm building was sold off to someone who converted it, and now they live there - young family in their late 20s with toddlers (we are in our 40s with teenagers).

"The problem is, they are so very loud. Their conversion forms a courtyard, and they just treat the courtyard as another room of the house. They usually have double doors open, TV or music on, shouting from one side to the other.

"It carries right through the area. There is no getting away from it, even going for a walk in the previously quiet fields. We have had some respite in the winter when it was cold, but they are back to normal today and I just know it will be like this until autumn. Do we just need to suck it up and accept that we have been lucky until now?"

The woman's post quickly sparked debate with other Mumsnet users as opinions appeared to be very divided. Some insisted the family were not doing anything wrong, while others agreed.

One user said: "I think you are being unreasonable unless they're out there late at night. We don't have a garden as we live in a flat, the very second we do have one I plan to use it as much as possible." Another wrote: "They aren't doing anything wrong. They are living in their property?"

However one person said: "You are not being unreasonable. Sounds like a nightmare but you’ll have to suck it up unfortunately." Another added: "I sympathise, my neighbour has four married daughters who visit regularly with their families and are so loud, they don’t talk to each other, they shout and their children argue and scream. She is looking to move, so hopefully we get a nice quiet family soon."
