When selecting a baby name, people may be influenced by their favourite songs, movies, films or books, while others want to use the name to honour someone they love.
One mum-to-be is reportedly desperate to name her baby boy after her brother who recently passed away.
Her husband respects her wishes and her reason for wanting to do so, but is doing everything he can to change her mind due to the unfortunate association the name has with their surname.
In an incredibly honest post online, the expectant dad admitted that their last name is Manson and his wife's brother was called - yep, you guessed it - Charles.
So the child's name would be Charles Manson, the exact same name as an American cult leader who was convicted of murder.
Understandably the dad doesn't want his son to be linked to a criminal, but his wife is adamant in her decision, so he has turned to Reddit to ask people's advice.
Writing on the Am I The A**hole forum, he said: "My wife Melissa (31F) and I (31M) have been married for four years. Melissa is eight months pregnant with our son.
"Unfortunately, our last name is Manson. As in Charles Manson. It really sucks but it's what I have. Neither of us have ever had a problem with that until now. A few weeks ago her brother unexpectedly passed away of a heart attack at the age of 35. We were both shocked and devasted. He was a great man who was always healthy, and we were very close to him. Nobody saw it coming.
"Melissa now wants to name our son after her brother. I would not have any issue with this, if her brother's name wasn't Charles."
The husband continued to say he has made it clear to his wife that he's "not okay" with giving their son this name, but she insists "nobody [will] notice or care" and now she thinks he is "disrespecting" her brother.
He asked: "Should I let this go and just name our son after a guy who has been so important in Melissa's life?"
More than 1,800 people have since replied to the post, with many agreeing with the dad not to name his kid Charles.
One person said: "Not the a**hole. You are truly protecting the kid. Use Charles as a middle name if you must, or maybe honour her brother using his middle name? A nickname she used to call him?"
Another replied: "Idk why wife thinks ppl won't notice the name Charles Manson…. They're 100% gonna notice it for sure."
A third added: "Naming kids is always a Two Yes/One No situation. If either person objects, that's the end of it."
