Mum shows how much sugar is in a Cadbury Creme Egg as a grim warning to parents

Easter is just a few days away, and alongside the religious celebration, many of us are preparing for a sugar-fest.

And the staggering news that Cadbury Creme Eggs aren't exactly a health food isn't going to leave anyone shocked.

The sweet fondant centre is too delicious for many of us to care - although they do leave us feeling a little queasy.

Now one mum has worked out exactly how much sugar is contained in a single Creme Egg, and people were somehow surprised.

She also issued a warning alongside her photographic evidence, warning it could "upset" Creme Egg fans.

People didn't believe the egg could contain so much sugar (Facebook)

In the photo, the mum laid out a Creme Egg alongside the hefty amount of sugar she claims the sweet treat contains, with a two pence coin added for scale.

The image left some people dubious, with one writing: "Couldn't fit that much sugar in the egg. This is a lie."

So we decided to test it out for ourselves.

According to the Cadbury website - the source of information we would rather not know - a Creme Egg weighs 40g, and contains 177 calories, 6.1g of fat and 26.5g of sugar.

But if you're like many of us, you're more concerned with how things taste - and a measurement of 26.5g of sugar means very little.

So we weighed it out - and although it appears to be slightly less than the mum's original photo thanks to a more forgiving camera angle, it's still pretty eye-opening.

NHS guidelines say adults should have no more than 30g of free sugars a day, which is about seven sugar cubes.

For children age seven to 10 the number drops to 24g, and for four to six year olds it's recommended not to exceed 19g.

That means one Creme Egg exceeds the daily recommended intake of sugar for those under the age of 11 - and even for adults, it leaves you with less than 4g left.

The images always divide opinion when they are recirculated on social media around Easter, leaving some put off as one wrote: "Wowsers! That’s A LOT of sugar. I love a creme egg but this is shocking".

A second said: "F*** off theres 26 g of sugar in a creme egg..."

But others had no time for it, as one argued: "I don't even care, I'm still gonna eat a multipack in one sitting on more than one occasion. Creme eggs are too good to give a s***."

Would this put you off a Cadbury Creme Egg or do they simply taste too good? Let us know in the comments.
