Mum's warning after son swallows 22 magnetic beads and rips his intestines apart

A mum has warned parents of the dangers of magnets after her son nearly died when he swallowed several which caused his intestines to be ripped apart.

Franklin Davis, 2, found a toy with his two older brothers at a nearby park which they played with for several days as they enjoyed sticking the magnetic beads on to other items.

Several weeks later the youngster, from Sydney, Australia, complained of an aching stomach and vomited which the family put down to an illness doing the rounds.

Over the coming weeks they visited the doctor several times as the symptoms continued.

When he later had a fall and suffered a cut lip they went to the emergency room where medics discovered magnets in his digestive tract.

His mum, Bree Davis, told 7Life : “Everyone just assumed it was gastro. we didn’t know he had swallowed them.

“I know about button batteries and the danger of small things like that, but not these magnetic balls.

“It makes you wonder about everything else that has magnets in them.”

Franklin was operated on for three hours as surgeons found 22 magnetic balls inside his body.

Some were found in his small intestine while others were found in his bowel and more around his digestive tract.

The doctors realised the boy had been in agony as the magnetic pull had pulled them towards each other, causing him agony in the process.

He was eventually sent home having made a full recovery while his mum is now raising awareness of the hidden dangers.

Meanwhile in the UK, a young boy suffered second degree burns after a cup of Bovril was accidentally dropped on his foot at a football match.

Nine-year-old Middlesbrough fan Theo Baverstock was intending to watch his hometown club with his dad Graeme against Fulham on Wednesday evening.

However, he suffered second degree on his foot after a fellow supporter dropped a freshly poured cup of Bovril on his foot, which left him in A&E, TeessideLive reports.

His dad Graeme said: "We went to the Boro game and we were stood in the queue and a gentleman turned around with a cup of bovril.

"He dropped it by accident and it went straight onto Theo's foot. Straight away he started screaming so it's gone through his shoe and his sock.

"First aid got involved as did the club doctor and he got taken straight to hospital where they found he had second degree burns.

“I felt really sorry for the gentleman who dropped it, he didn't mean to do it and it was a total accident.”
