Australian swim stalwart Madison Wilson has backtracked on plans to return to the pool after the birth of her first child.

The 30-year-old has announced her retirement after initially planning to make a comeback after giving birth to Austin last August.

"I thought I would come back and compete after Aussie (Austin) was born," said Wilson, whose partner is Australian white ball cricketer Matt Short.

"And while it's hard to coordinate sporting schedules with Matt, it's more I don't want to miss anything (involving Austin) ... I have new perspective."

Wilson has been a Dolphins mainstay since making her debut at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The renowned relayer won two gold medals at her two Olympics in 2016 and 2021 and collected another eight golds in relays at five world championships.

Wilson was credited with helping change the Dolphins' culture to more team-first approach by Swimming Australia's head coach Rohan Taylor.

"Madi was incredibly passionate about the growth of the Dolphins team and a trusted advocate for the athletes," Taylor said.

"It was a great pleasure to work with her particularly in that space so it's always bittersweet to see a natural leader like that go."
