Mum's heartbreak as bride won't make wedding accessible for daughter's wheelchair

A bride has been slammed for her decision to plan a beachfront wedding venue her niece will struggle to attend.

The relative, 8, uses a wheelchair, meaning it will be difficult for her to attend the sandy location. But her aunt, who knew this in advance, went ahead and booked the venue anyway.

As a result, the child's mum, who also happens to be the bride's sister, lashed out at the couple, and she's thinking of refusing to attend herself.

"I truly have never been more shocked and disappointed in my sister," wrote the mum in a post to Reddit explaining her upset.

She added: "It's already so difficult raising a child with disabilities without a partner, but when even family is this inconsiderate and cruel, it's truly the worst feeling."

In her post to 'Am I the A****e', the single mum explained: "Mia has been disabled since the day she was born and needs wheelchair assistance and constant care whenever she is awake. I absolutely love her to death and it's only been us during this entire journey, so I'm definitely super protective of my little girl."

She went on to say her sister is soon to be married, and she was stunned to learn the entire occasion will be held at a local beach - "a 35 person ceremony right by the water followed by a bonfire and barbecue also in the sand."

The mum, who was told before the bride "sent the official invite because of Mia" was flabbergasted. The parent reasoned: "You would think she would at least check in with me before she reserved the beach space because Mia obviously can’t come. And now she's only telling me because it's set in stone and there’s nothing she can change."

She added that her daughter will be 'absolutely heartbroken' not to be able to attend her beloved aunt's wedding. While the couple ensured the beach has a wheelchair that can be used on sand, the parent would have to fork out $110 (£90) to rent it for the day.

"The audacity to ask your guests to be paying just to make it to the event (especially when she knows I cannot afford this)," the mum wrote.

Unfortunately, the couple, who say they have always dreamed of being married at the beach as it is where they met, said they cannot afford the cost either. As a result, many commenters had mixed opinions over what must surely be a difficult dilemma for everyone involved.

One popular response which received over 1,000 likes read: "I have a daughter in a wheelchair and it's really freaking hard to be left out. That being said, please know that sometimes in life you have to accept that you can't do everything and that's just the way it is. Your sister has a right to be married anywhere she wants. Take a step back, breathe deeply and wish them a lovely time."

However, a different commenter wrote: "Going against the grain to say YNTA [you're not the a*****e. They decided on a venue with a strong emotional attachment. Can't fault them for that. I do think it's an a*****e move for them to go for a venue they know would be difficult for their niece and NOT foot the bill to accommodate her.

"Common decency seems to have been lost on them and I don't blame you for being upset about it."

The responder added: "Being a single mother is already such a difficult situation. You love your daughter endlessly and that's already such a beautiful thing. Keep your head up, Mama. Mia is lucky to have you."
