Mum's dog killed 'instantly' during vicious mauling on the beach

A mum said she "broke down" after finding out her dog had been savagely killed by another dog when walking on New Brighton Beach.

Debbie Mossop told the ECHO she broke down after she was told by her husband that her four-year-old pomeranian was killed by a dog when walking on Tuesday, May 17. Debbie said the pomeranian, called Kiki, was "her baby" and "was everything to her".

The 61-year-old from Thingwall said Kiki was being walked by her husband on New Brighton Beach around 4pm on May 17 when an American bulldog suddenly attacked the helpless dog. Debbie said the little dog would have been killed "almost instantly" after the much larger dog crushed her in between its jaws.

Debbie told the ECHO : "Kiki was walking off the lead and was playing in the pools of water down by the beach. A pitbull-type dog suddenly appeared and my little pom trotted over wagging her tail.

"But before my husband could get to her the dog had her in its mouth. My husband thinks she'd have died almost instantly as she'd have been crushed by the dog."

Debbie added her husband desperately tried to rescue the pomeranian by wrestling the American bulldog but it was too late to save Kiki.

Debbie, who owns fashion boutique Pretty Dollz in Upton, said she's had dogs all her life and has been a dog breeder. She said: "I was just hysterical when I found out - a customer had to come over to try and comfort me and calm me down.

"I just broke down after hearing the news. I know everyone thinks their dog is special but Kiki was my baby - she really was special to me."

Debbie said the vicious attack was made even more painful as another family pet, a bulldog they bred, died just 10 days before. She added: "We had three dogs an within 10 days we now only have one - it's all a bit too much at the moment."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson confirmed to the ECHO the attack was currently being investigated. They said: "Police are investigating following a dog attack on New Brighton beach earlier this week.

"At around 4.45pm on Tuesday, May 17 we received a report that a Pomeranian dog had been attacked by an American bulldog. The Pomeranian sadly died as a result of her injuries.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information is asked to contact us via @MerPolCC on Twitter or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook, with reference 22000339333."
