A mum has been left outraged after her daughter's teacher embarrassed her in front of her entire class because a burp slipped out mid lesson. The schoolgirl was playing netball in a PE lesson when she accidentally let a burp out - and when she checked to see whether anybody noticed, she locked eyes with her teacher.
Despite already being embarrassed over what happened, she was sent out of class over her "bad manners". Not only was she ordered to change back into her regular school uniform, she had to spend the rest of the lesson copying from a textbook and had to complete an after school detention as punishment for her behaviour in class.
Taking to Mumsnet, her mum said: "My eldest daughter, [who is in] year 9, came home later from school than she usually would.
"When she got in, I asked her why and she told me she had been at a 20 minute after school detention for burping in PE while playing netball in the gym."
The mum couldn't believe her daughter was given such a "harsh detention" over an accidental burp - and called the teacher "silly" and "ridiculous" for it.
However, she is thankful that her daughter has now "calmed down" about the entire situation - and is no longer upset about it.
While most users shared their shock over the "over-the-top punishment", others urged her to speak to the PE teacher to better understand her reasoning behind it.
One user said: "Did the loud burp follow 15 minutes of whispering to her friend, giggling and trying to make the person in front of her laugh?
"I suspect that there's more to this story than she has shared with you and that she had been messing about for most of the lesson and the teacher had had enough."
Another user added: "If it was a loud burp it's a bit rude, she could have stifled it. I think it's OK - 20 mins after school isn't very long."
A third user said: "Was she accidentally burping or was she deliberately being disruptive or disrespectful. I'd be very surprised if it was a simple as your daughter is making out."
One more user added: "Loud burping is gross and disrespectful - most people can control it."
