Mum-of-two praises Iceland after receiving free food in online shop

A mum-of-two from Wigan has praised Iceland for helping families with free food amid the cost of living crisis. Zoe Riley received not one, but two free items in her online shopping order, just because they were short dated.

The 33-year-old shared her bargain on the Yellow Sticker Society Facebook group, where shoppers often share their bargains and reduced food finds, writing: “Some freebies on my Iceland online shop today.” The picture showed a pack of four quarter pounder beef burgers and maple BBQ pork loin steaks which had been reduced in her order.

Yellow stickers displayed the original price of £3.85, which was reduced to £2.50. However a second sticker read: “This product is FREE as it’s short dated.”

Zoe, who lives in Billinge, told the Manchester Evening News : “This is my first Iceland order in around a year as I have an Asda delivery pass but needed loads of ice lollies which are cheaper there. I was placing a big shop which was £72, which is a typical weekly shop as we are a family of four, including two adults, a six and a two year old.”

The mum had ordered the burgers and loins - worth £7.70 - but bagged them for free as Iceland deemed them short dated. However, anyone who hunts for yellow stickers will know anything longer than same day is considered very good. Zoe’s BBQ products both had the following days date on it, giving them more time to eat them before they went out of date.

“I do love a bargain but don’t have time to do in store shopping so miss out,” Zoe said. “It definitely helps save money if it’s something you were going to buy anyway - like the case with this delivery. This will do two night’s tea for us.

“I think it’s an amazing thing for Iceland to do, so much food goes to landfill and there are so many people struggling at the minute. Other supermarkets should definitely follow suit.

“Food shop prices are up during the school holiday as kids seem to live for snacks which can be costly so any saving helps.”

Other yellow sticker fans commented on Zoe's post and agreed the scheme is a great idea. One shopper said: "I got a freebie in my order this week too never ever have before must be a new thing I'm definitely not complaining."

Another added: "Every time I do an online shop at Iceland there is something 'free' as it's short dated. Always makes my day.."
