When trying to make an impression on your teacher, the best thing a student can do is actively listen and participate in class. But one 15-year-old has been standing out in the classroom for all the wrong reasons - and it has landed him a detention.
His mum said she received an email from her son's teacher explaining her decision to keep him inside at lunch time due to his behaviour in class. But she couldn't help but laugh at the reason the teacher gave for putting this mark on his record.
Sharing the email on Reddit, it reads: "I have [NAME REMOVED] lunch detention tomorrow for something inappropriate he did in class today. We were playing a review game and he gave himself the name 'Mass Debater'. A minor issue, but I thought I should let you know."
Commenting on his nickname, one Reddit commenter joked: "I guess no mass debating allowed, only solo."
Another added: "This is worth a detention? Why not make him change it and tell him not to do it again, because he'd then get a detention for not respecting his teacher."
A third user said: "Educators are supposed to be encouraging healthy debate not shutting it down!"
Meanwhile, others shared how they landed themselves a detention while at school, with some saying it was totally unjustified.
One user said: "My middle name is Payne and I got detention for telling my Science teacher that was my middle name when she said I was being a pain."
Another commenter added: "I got detention in sixth grade because the end of my mechanical pencil came off when I clicked it.
"The spring bounced onto another students desk. I did nothing more than click it.
"I was immediately told I will receive a detention. I believe the teacher thought I threw it. No amount of pleading and trying to explain worked.
"The teacher thought I was lying. It was the only detention I ever received. F*** you Mrs. Lance... I wasn't lying."
One more user said: "I once got detention for hugging my then-girlfriend on Valentine's Day."
