Mum gobsmacked after comparing price difference between Tesco and Tesco Express

A money-savvy mum has warned other shoppers to be careful when visiting supermarket-branded convenience stores as prices can soar compared to their larger shops.

Beth Turbutt-Rogers says she was shocked at the price difference when she popped into a Tesco Express store in the Midlands and found the prices much higher than a Tesco Extra just five minutes down the road.

The 27-year-old mum took people on a tour around her local Tescos for a TikTok video and decided to compare the prices.

Beth said: "With the cost of just about everything going up at the minute, especially food, now is really the time to question where we shop, more than ever before.

"If Tesco is your preferred supermarket just make sure you’re shopping at a big store rather than a local convenience shop."

In the video she shows:

  • 27 Finish dishwasher tablets - £6.30 at Tesco Express, £5.50 at Tesco Extra
  • 210 Yorkshire Tea teabags - £6.30 at Tesco Express, £5.49 at Tesco Extra price-matched to Aldi

  • A box of mini Weetabix - £4.05 at Tesco Express, £3.50 at Tesco Extra

  • Heinz tomato ketchup 700g - £4.40 at Tesco Express, £3.90 at Tesco Extra

  • Anchor butter - £5.05 at Tesco Express, £4.50 at Tesco Extra

  • Cathedral City mature cheddar 350g - £3.90 at Tesco Express, £3.49 at Tesco Extra price-matched to Aldi

She added: "I was really shocked at the difference between the big Tesco and the Tesco Express.

"These shops are literally five minutes apart, but the price difference is a lot."

The money-saving money reminded people that making a list and sticking to it is the best way to stop you spending too much and having to pop to the local smaller stores.

She said: "I think the key thing to remember is planning.

"You could even look at taking out a Tesco delivery pass so that you can do all your shopping online.

"If you were to take out their delivery plan, which is £6.99 a month; you could do two deliveries a week, meaning that you wouldn’t ever need to pop to the shop for bread and milk and risk over spending.

"If you had two deliveries a week, this would equate to just 87p for every delivery."

A Tesco spokesman told the Mirror: “We work hard to ensure our customers get great value at Tesco, whether they shop with us online, in a large store, or in an Express store.

"Our Express stores offer a range of extremely competitive own brand products, as well as offering great value deals through Clubcard Prices.

"Clubcard Prices offer customers up to 50% off on thousands of lines – from frozen food to branded cupboard fillers – helping them spend less with us."
