Mum fumes after mother-in-law secretly has her daughter's ears pierced

A woman says she was filled with "rage and hurt" after learning her mother-in-law had taken her daughter out to get her ears pierced, without gaining her prior consent. According to this fuming mum, her five-year-old daughter, who will soon turn six, has brought up getting her ears pierced a few times, but has also been "on the fence about wanting it done."

Her in-laws regularly look after her children, and so her mother-in-law is well aware of the little girl's "off and on wishes" on this front. The topic was brought up during a recent phone call, during which she told her mother-in-law how she wanted to wait and take her to "a tattoo shop to get it professionally done when she’s good and ready."

She also specifically stated that she didn't want her daughter getting her ears pierced "somewhere like Claire's." Unfortunately, her mother-in-law went completely over her head, appearing not to have taken any of these stipulations onboard.

Taking to Reddit, the enraged mother - who goes by the username u/spidermanpan - recalled: "Today I woke up (I work overnight shifts) and my in-laws were watching my kids.

"They come back to drop them off and lo and behold my mother-in-law was basically like 'surprise! She got her ears pierced!' At Claire’s no less. The amount of rage and hurt I feel for what happened.

"The fact that my wishes were violated. The fact that it was done where I said not to. And the fact that it was done without my consent and my presence."

She says her mother-in-law claimed she'd simply assumed she "didn’t really care about it being done", and so decided to arrange the piercing appointment for the little girl's birthday present. However, given how young the child is, the mum had wanted to wait until she was completely serious about it, and had already made this very clear.

A number of fellow Reddit users completely understood where she was coming from, with one person commenting: "I’d never trust her alone with your child again. She knew exactly what she doing and she has proved that she doesn’t respect your views or choices."

Another advised: "Your mother-in-law should be put in time out for some period of time you and your spouse agree on for going against your wishes.

"My personal opinion is that nobody should get body parts pierced until they are able to handle all the aftercare themselves. If your daughter's ears get infected thanks to mother-in-law's actions be sure to send her the medical bills."
