Mum found dead by two children in Roscommon suffered what appeared to be head injury

Gardai are investigating the death of a mother who was found dead by her two young children.

Martina Reynolds, 32, was discovered dead in her bed at her home in Kilglass, Co Roscommon, at around 9am on Saturday.

Tragic Martina, who had worked as a nurse, had suffered what appeared to be a head injury in what gardai described as "unexplained circumstances".

It is understood her traumatised children managed to raise the alarm amid the shocking circumstances.

A postmortem examination on Sunday returned inconclusive results.

Sources say gardai are now awaiting the results of toxicology tests which will determine the cause of Martina’s death and the course of their inquiry.

Local independent councillor Tom Crosby, who knows the family, said the community is in shock.

He added: "I want to extend my sincere condolences and for the family to be able to get through this awful, difficult and very tragic event." Local priest Fr Evaristus Nkede also told the Irish Mirror how he attended the scene and said prayers at the house after hearing the news.

He added: "I was at the house at the time the gardai were doing some work there. I said prayers.

"I came there from the church just to sympathise with them and say a prayer. There’s a lot of sorrow in the hearts of people today."

Forensic officers were sent to the scene at Carrigeen in Kilglass on Sunday.

Gardai have also spoken to Martina’s husband, who is understood to have told officers he had left home earlier on Saturday morning for work.

A Garda spokesman said: "A postmortem has been completed by the State Pathologist, the results of which are not being released for operational purposes.

"We are appealing to any one who may have information to call Castlerea Garda station on 094 962 1630, the Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any station."
