Mum faces backlash over her outspoken views on babies being taken on board planes

A mum has been called "unreasonable" for suggesting babies should not be allowed on flights.

The woman took to parenting forum Mumsnet to share her experience of the "worst plane ride of [her] life", in which she was sat near a crying baby.

She stated that it was "irresponsible to bring a freshly born baby" onto a plane and asked whether it was "unreasonable" to think babies should not be allowed to fly abroad.

The mum wrote: "I've recently just came back from a holiday to Barcelona and it was the worst plane ride of my life! A poor newborn baby was screaming at the top of its lungs the whole flight.

"I have kids myself, a daughter who is 20 and a son who is 16, so I know how stressful it can be in a public place when your baby starts crying but I would never take a tiny baby on a four hour flight.

"It’s not fair for the baby and it affects all the other passengers on the plane. I think it’s quite irresponsible to bring a freshly born baby on a plane, I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion but a lot of the people on the plane were being affected by it.

"From what I seen on the baby it was only about a month old, at least wait a few more months until your baby is old enough to play with toys and be occupied! Am I being unreasonable to think it’s selfish to bring a tiny baby on a four-hour flight abroad?"

Before long, the post had received dozens of replies from fellow Mumsnet users, with the majority in agreement that the woman was being "unreasonable".

One wrote: "You are being unreasonable. Firstly you have no idea why they were travelling, could be a repatriation flight, traveling home, to see family, or just for a holiday which is also fine."

A second shared: "I flew with my youngest when she was about four weeks old. It was the easiest flight I've ever done - she either slept or fed. I don't think you can suggest a blanket ban because of one bad flight!"

A third agreed: "Being stuck on a flight with someone who annoys you is all part of flying. It’s not irresponsible however much you felt put out by it."

"I think you should mind your own business," argued a fourth, while a fifth echoed: "It’s none of your business at all what other families want to do."

A sixth stated: "It's okay to find screaming babies on planes annoying. Nobody likes it. But it's public transport. A flying bus. Babies are part of society, sometimes you'll have to encounter them if you move in public spaces."

"Don’t be ridiculous," a seventh simply said.

However, some users agreed with the woman, with one writing: "You are not being unreasonable. It’s the reason I don’t fly short-haul or economy and that I have noise cancelling headphones."
