Mum faces backlash after falling out with her friend over huge £92 takeaway bill

Meeting pals for a meal out can be the highlight of anyone's week - until the bill arrives.

Even lifelong besties can fall out over who owes what as the charge is tallied up. Some around the table are happy to split the cost evenly while others take a more itemised approach - calculating how much their individual meal came to.

But what about takeaways? Do the same rule apply when you pop around to a pal's house and they order a delivery? Well, for one mum, a mammoth Chinese meal left a bitter taste in the mouth when it came time to pay.

The Mirror reports how she was left feeling "really uncomfortable" when her mate asked to split the cost of the whopping £92 order. Taking her concerns to the Am I Being Unreasonable forum on Mumsnet, the unnamed mum was "speechless" that she was fronted with the cost.

She was clearly left stunned at being expected to contribute despite being invited round as a guest. She explained: "I visited my friends home recently with my 12-year-old and she has three kids herself and lives in a very nice large home (just for information).

"I took some gifts for them then early evening she said there was a great Chinese nearby and should we order a takeaway? Great idea - I ordered a few dishes for me and my daughter and she ordered five dishes for her and her three children. She then said that’s £92 and just give her £45," she added.

She continued: "I was speechless as we were guests in her home and she invited us for dinner and I was scrambling through my purse as I had my cards on me and only just had enough cash to give her.

"I would never do that to a guest in my home and I felt really uncomfortable afterwards. Just wondered what you think as it’s been bugging me," she pleaded for advice.

While the mum admitted that she would "never" ask a guest in her home to split the bill, fellow Mumsnet users were quick to disagree.

People online admitted that would always "expect to pay" towards the cost of food - no matter if it was at a restaurant or at home. "I would have added up the amount for the dishes I had ordered and paid that," one user said.

Another added: "I’d expect to pay towards a takeaway in friend’s house. I would expect to split a takeaway, just as I would a meal in a restaurant," a third agreed. A fourth added: "I’d pay for what I ordered and towards a delivery charge/tip."
