Mum devastated as baby daughter's headstone left looking like ‘haunted castle’

A devastated mum says her daughter's princess headstone has been left looking like a "haunted castle" due to a painting error.

Vicky Mclean, 37, from West Lothian, was horrified when the paint from her daughter’s bright pink gravestone faded dramatically, leaving it looking like a ‘haunted castle’.

Kiarah Karen Mccauley was tragically born sleeping at 37 weeks in December 2019.

Vicky said she was shocked when she learned that her baby girl's heart had stopped beating, as she was told she was perfectly healthy at a scan the day before, the Daily Record reports.

She said there was never a reason given as to why Kiarah was stillborn, with her death certificate showing it as unexplained.

Vicky claims she has been waiting over a year for the now dull grey stone at her little girl's final resting place to be replaced by the Headstone Centre in Alva, who first fitted it in November 2020.

Bingo worker Vicky said: "It's been going on for months. At first they agreed to change it and were getting back to me but then it seemed like they started to ignore my messages.

"Having to chase them to fix it for so long has been draining and if I'm honest, it's starting to depress me.

"I just want my daughter's resting place finished and beautiful, the way she deserves it to be."

Vicky said the paint issue isn't the only problem with her daughter's headstone.

She explained: "It was firstly supposed to be getting replaced because they had made a spelling mistake. They wrote babysister instead of baby sister.

"I told them about the mistake the first day it was installed. Whilst waiting for this to be fixed the colour started to run.

"It went from looking like a lovely princess castle to a haunted castle.

"I actually hate going to her graveside now because I don't like seeing what she has been left with."

Vicky paid around £700 to the Headstone Centre when she first ordered it and was due to pay the remaining balance of £700 upon completion.

However, she has since been told they will replace it free of charge because of the errors.

Andy Butterworth, owner of Headstone Centre, Alva, said: “We have made considerate changes to the replacement headstone three times at the customer's request.

"It is now ready and waiting to be fitted, however we have been waiting on a response from Ms McLean before going ahead as we did not want to proceed before we knew she was 100% happy with it.

"We have also replaced the stone with a bigger one, at no extra charge, because Ms Mclean was not happy with the size of the one she had originally chosen.

"As far as the paint issue is concerned, I have no idea how or why this happened, however we have used a different paint this time around to guarantee it does not run again.

"As a family run business we strive to create the perfect headstone for our customers' loved ones, but on this occasion every change involved redoing the whole stone which takes weeks to complete.

"This was quite difficult after her telling us she had no intention of paying the remaining balance of the first stone."
