Mum creates crushed velvet sofa for £111 using bargains from B&M and Tesco

Buying a brand-new sofa can cost hundreds of pounds, especially if you’re after a stylish crushed velvet suite.

Hannah Paterson, 23, decided to help her partner’s mum to create her own dream sofa to save money. They bought a large white leather suite on Gumtree and used bargains from B&M and Tesco to create a crushed velvet masterpiece.

As reported by LatestDeals.co.uk, Hannah told money-saving Facebook group DIY On A Budget UK: "My partner's mum originally had a crushed velvet sofa but it was broken so she decided to get a new sofa. She missed her crushed velvet but couldn’t justify paying the price for a corner sofa.

“Instead, she came up with the idea of upcycling the leather sofa she had just bought. We got four crushed velvet curtains, king-size bedding and a glue gun and staple gun. We already had the glue gun and staple gun at home.

“The curtains were two for £20 in B&M so cost £40 in total, and the bedding originally was on Tesco Clubcard for £21.50. It took a lot of patience and cutting the material to size to fit perfectly into the recliners, cup holders and in the sofa cracks without ruffling when someone sits on it.”

To create the sofa, they pulled the material tight and glued underneath. They also stapled the material to the wood at the back of the sofa for extra security. Hannah is made up with the finished result which cost just £111.50 in total.

Hannah said: “It looks perfect and we are so chuffed with the end result. It just goes to show you don’t need a lot of money to make something look nice. It makes me really happy that with the crisis of rising living costs, it didn’t cost a fortune to do our DIY on a budget.

“The average sofa we were looking at for a crushed velvet material was an average cost of between £700 and £800, so we are so chuffed to have a crushed velvet sofa that only really cost £111.50!”
