A mother and baby have been found safe and well after placenta was found, sparking panic and horror in a Manchester park.

Greater Manchester Police have said that “we have now located mum and baby,” after the shocking find in Werneth Park, Oldham, on Friday.

A large number of officers were seen patrolling the grounds after calls from the public at around 2.40pm.

The “suspiscious item” found was later analysed and found to be human placenta - igniting concerns for the welfare of a mother and child. Tests showed that the birth had happened within 24 hours of the find.

Detective inspector Andy Day of the Oldham district had issued a call for information and a number of forensic professionals were seen in the area.

“We are pleased to say that they are both safe and doing well,” said the police in an updated statement at 11.30pm on Friday.

“Alongside medical professionals, we have conducted several enquiries and are satisfied that the identity of those who have come forward match the placenta found.”

The probe was said to not be a “criminal” one but more out of a concern for welfare.

Police have now said the investigation has closed and that the park is now back open as normal.

“The scene will now close, and our investigation has concluded that there are no untoward circumstances,” the force said in its statement,

“We want to thank members of the public who have assisted us and cooperated with the closure of the park today, and hope that this update provides closure to any earlier concerns.”
