Mum, 62, spends her evening deflating SUVs tyres as she's 'fed up' with air pollution

A mum-of-three spends her evenings walking home from work targeting SUV cars and deflating their tyres.

The 62-year-old has made the shocking confession claiming she became “fed up” with London’s air pollution and the “imposing” cars.

Anna, who asked MyLondon not to use her real name, lives near Battersea, London, and became gradually shocked at the number of 4x4s she was seeing on the capital’s roads.

Her distaste of the cars became loathing, and eventually she turned to the “destructive” action of deflating their tyres.

Anna said whilst she had been caught deflating tyres by the cars’ owners and chauffeurs, she has avoided police so far.

But the writer, volunteer and film worker said she doesn’t fear jail and knows what she’s doing is illegal and could land her a prison sentence.

She said: "It started about 10 years ago. I remember when the Smart Cars came out and I thought it would change the way we travel around cities.

“I realised after a while that this wasn't the case, I just kept seeing cars getting bigger and bigger. It angered me because I just thought that they are so unnecessary in size.

"The cars are releasing carbon emissions and polluting the area around me and I can't do anything about it.

“They're being imposed on me and I thought for a long time about what I could do about it. Then I found out about the Tyre Extinguisher movement".

Defending her illegal actions, Anna claimed that SUV drivers were “aggressive” and “selfish” and compared them to smoking - adding they should be “banned”, like indoor smoking too.

She was also fuelled by the environmental impact of the cars.

Anna added that she felt action had to be taken because people weren’t being “considerate” and claimed to have deflated “80 different cars” so far.

“I don't want to be doing it and I don't enjoy it, but it's an extreme reaction that comes from desperation. If the government won't do anything then what else can we do?" she added.

Describing one time she was caught, she said: "I was caught by an owner one time when I had my hand on his tyre cap. I don't often do it in the day but this time I did.

"He was in a coffee shop across the road and saw me do it, he walked out and came up to confront me. I explained what I was doing and to be honest, by the end of it, he actually told me that he 'understands where I'm coming from'.

"I don't mind about being caught by the police. I have talked about it a lot with friends and family but that just isn't something I'm scared of. I'm more scared about being confronted by angry drivers, I don't care so much about the police."

Whilst she might not care about the police, there is also the very serious question of endangering the driver’s safety as they wouldn’t be aware they have flat tyres.

Anna said she had “considered that” but thought the 'danger SUVs are causing' outweighs the threat to injury she herself is causing.

Anna said she will continue to deflate tyres until “the government notices”.

Deflating a car's tyre which isn't yours can be classed as criminal damage, and the offence is punishable with a prison sentence.
