Mum, 34, and son, 3, who died after lorry crashes into broken down car pictured

A mum and her toddler son who died after a lorry ploughed into their broken down car, have been pictured for the first time.

Nicola Courtney and her three-year-old boy Lucas Page from Scunthorpe died in the devastating crash on the A180 near Immingham, Lincolnshire on Friday.

In one of the 34 year old's last posts on social media on Tuesday, three days before the fatal accident, the dedicated mum posted a picture of little Lucas in a red all-in-one winter suit.

The cheeky toddler smiled at the camera while holding on to the gear stick in the family tractor, while wearing his Spider-Man wellies.

His mum wrote: "This picture is just everything. My baby in his overalls and wellies working with his grandad on the tractor."

Friends and family have been paying tribute referring to the mum and son as "angels in the sky".

Nicola's cousin Carli Withers wrote: "I’ve never known a life without you in it nor has Alfie without Lucas. I thought they’d grow up together like we did and now we’ve lost you both.

"I’ll love you forever my best friend and cousin, RIP my darling Nicola and beautiful little Lucas."

And cousin Rachel Ensor added: "The most devastating news. There will be a massive hole in the family forever the craziest big cousin of them al.

"Rest in peace you and your beautiful baby boy Lucas. Love you Nicola hope you’ll be table dancing up there."

Friend Naomi Longfield added: "This world is a very sad one we live in. One of my bestest friends and her little boy are going to be missed so much by so many .

"God mamma to my babies, we forever picked each other up when we needed it. I’ll never get my head around how I won’t see you and Lucas again and speak to you both.

"I’m absolutely heart broken, I will love and miss you both forever."

A woman said she had to "swerve" in the dark to avoid Nicola's broken down car and called emergency services shortly before the crash.

Witnesses said they believed the Ford Focus was "stranded" in the left-hand lane of the dual carriageway before it was struck by a HGV.

Police are investigating the collision, and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Humberside Police has referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Complaints (IOPC) in relation to the collision.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "The full circumstances of the collision will be established during this complex investigation, and we would ask for people not to speculate about the circumstances of the crash."

In a statement on Saturday, the spokeswoman said: "Officers investigating a fatal road traffic collision are appealing for information following an incident on Friday 10 March.

"At around 9.06pm last night a white articulated lorry was travelling westbound along the A180, Immingham between Stallingborough and Brocklesby when it collided with stationary blue Ford Focus which is thought to have broken down in a live lane.

"Sadly, a 34-year-old woman and 3-year-old boy travelling in the Ford Focus sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision and died at the scene.

"Their families have been informed and are currently being supported by specialist trained officers and partnering agencies at this incredibly difficult time."
