A railway accident in Croatia has reportedly left at least three people dead and 11 more with injuries when a passenger train collided with a freight train yesterday evening (Friday, Sept 9).
The accident is said to have occurred about 9.30pm — 8.30pm in Britain — near the town of Novska, about four miles north of the border with Bosnia. Croatia's prime minister, Andrej Plenkovic, who attended the scene with government officials shortly after the accident told reporters: “The impact was huge.”
Mr Plenkovic added that so far the bodies of three people had been recovered at the site of the accident, but feared there would be more victims found once daylight broke in the area.
Casualties who survived the crash were taken to a nearby hospital. It was reported that some had serious injuries, although it was thought the none were life-threatening, said the prime minister. “It’s night time, there is no light, we don’t know at the moment if there are more victims,” he told journalists at the scene.
It is unclear at the moment what might have caused the collision. The passenger train was a local service carrying around 13 people, while the engine driver was the only person in the freight train, said Mr Plenkovic. He added that it appeared that some foreign citizens were thought to be among the injured.
Government officials said that both trains had been derailed by the force of the collision. An investigation is already under way to determine the cause of the collision.
